Alberto Del Rio is 0-2 in World Title Matches

Rob Van Dam, the No. 1 contender to World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio, might be interested to learn this Night of Champions fact: In World Championship competition, The Essence of Excellence’s record is an unfavorable 0-2.

The Mexican Aristocrat’s first WWE Title reign came to a close at Night of Champions 2011, when he fell to John Cena. Last year, Del Rio switched roles from champion to challenger for a match against World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus. Yet again, Del Rio was dealt a setback, losing to The Celtic Warrior.

Might those losses merely be a sign of things to come for Del Rio on Sunday, Sept. 15?

At least two new titleholders have been crowned at each Night of Champions

If history tells us nothing else, it’s that the balance of power shifts at Night of Champions. Without exception, every edition of the event has featured at least two title changes.

At 2007’s Vengeance: Night of Champions, Johnny Nitro captured the vacant ECW Title and Melina won the WWE Women’s Title. The following year, Mark Henry won the ECW Title, Kofi Kingston won the Intercontinental Title and Cody Rhodes turned his back on Hardcore Holly to win the World Tag Team Championship with Ted DiBiase. Three new titleholders were also crowned in 2009, with Christian claiming the ECW Title, Mickie James becoming the Divas Champion and Jeff Hardy winning the World Heavyweight Title.

The 2010 pay-per-view witnessed more title changes than any other Night of Champions: Cody Rhodes & Drew McIntyre won the WWE Tag Team Titles, Michelle McCool won the newly unified Divas Title, Daniel Bryan scored the U.S. Championship and Randy Orton overcame a Six-Pack Challenge to win the WWE Title.

Both World Titles found new owners in 2011, with John Cena defeating Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Championship and The World’s Strongest Man beating The Viper for the World Heavyweight Title. Last year, Team Hell No unseated WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston & R-Truth, while Eve dethroned Divas Champion Layla.

How many Superstars will snare championship gold this year? One thing is certain: it will be a “Night” for the WWE Universe to remember.
